- Vomiting blood
- Blood in their stool or urine
- Loss of consciousness

Gastric Dilatation Volvulus in Dogs
Although it’s not as well-known as other health hazards that affect canines, GDV is a serious condition that can occur in dogs. It is caused by the accumulation of gas in the bowels, causing severe swelling of the stomach accompanied by twisting of the intestines. Symptoms include repeated dry heaving attempts to vomit along with an exaggerated humpback stance. If not treated quickly, the swelling can shut off the flow of blood in the large abdominal arteries, leading to death in less than an hour from organ failure. If you see prolonged signs of GDV in your dog, you should get them to your Mountain Home veterinarian immediately for specialized care.
Emergency First Aid for Your Pet
Knowing how to stabilize your pet’s condition with basic first aid procedures can save their life.

- Choking – Carefully reach into its throat to remove the instruction or deliver sharp blows to its chest to expel it.
- CPR – With your pet lying on its side, hold its mouth closed while blowing through its nostrils every few seconds
